facelift models feature a number of benefits compared to the earlier models, including updated bodywork and a number of detail improvements. The later models also feature a greater number of Toyota parts, bringing greatly increased reliability and build quality, plus cheaper / more obtainable spare parts. In my opinion they really are the best Excel models and I think are the ones destined to be future classics. This is a 1989 model and looks amazing in white, with a tan interior. It has only covered 75,000 miles, with just 7 previous owners and it has both MOT and tax to the end of December. The car is in very original / standard condition and even has the original Lotus tool kit still with it. It also has the optional Power Steering, which comes in handy with the wide tyres and makes parking a lot easier. In addition to the standard equipment, it also benefits from an after market Immobiliser and a great sounding Panasonic CD player / radio. It also has a stainless steel exhaust system. As you will see from the pictures, the Excel has been fitted with stunning 17” alloys, which really update the look of the car. The alloys are in great condition, with just some minor scratching / marks and the Marshall ZR rated tyres (215 on the front and 235 on the back) all have plenty of tread left. As mentioned, the car has only covered 75,000 miles and has a large ring binder full of service history. The most recent service was only last December and since this time it has covered minimal mileage. In addition to the usual service items, this service also included a new fuel pump and new brake discs / pads all round. With a glass fibre body and a galvanised chassis, rust is clearly not an issue and the body is in excellent condition. The paintwork still looks good, although being 21 years old there are obviously some minor marks, stone chips etc. The lacquer has also lifted in a couple of isolated places, with a patch on the passenger side A pillar and another patch on the boot lid. Overall the car still looks stunning and never fails to attract positive comments. The interior is in tan, with cloth faced seats and is in really good original condition, with no significant wear or damage. The headlining in the rear of the car has dropped slightly in a couple of small isolated areas, but these are minor and can be easily glued back up. The overall headlining is still good. All of the electrics work OK, although the fuel gauge reading flickers slightly. This is a common problem and is probably just a bad earth. The headlights pop up and work fine, although there is currently a temporary switch fitted to raise one headlight. This works fine and it just means that you need to use 2 switches to put the headlights on. Looking at the service history, this has been fitted for several years and it should be easy to switch back to the original single switch if required ~ I would imagine that it was originally a fault with the main headlight switch and being a Toyota item, these are cheap and readily available. The only other fault to mention is that the boot does not lock. It opens and closes fine, but does not actually lock on the key. It may be that the lock is seized and can be freed up, but at worst it would need a new lock cylinder. These are again Toyota items (from a 1980’s Celica) and are very simple to fit. Overall the Lotus is in great condition and drives really well. I think the Excel is a very underrated model and the handling in particular is superb. They are such fun to drive, are very reliable and are probably the most practical car available in its class. You can even fits adults in the back seats ! In the time I have owned the Lotus it has been totally reliable, great to drive and surprisingly inexpensive to run. Fully Comprehensive insurance is very cheap, on a limited mileage classic car policy and the car is surprisingly good on petrol. There is an extensive network of Lotus specialists who can supply most parts at very reasonable prices and also service / repair them at a realistic cost (I would highly recommend joining one of the Lotus owners clubs, to find out more details about these specialists and the network of enthusiastic owners). Overall this Lotus Excel looks stunning, drives brilliantly and is a true useable modern classic, which never fails to attract interest and positive comments. Good examples are becoming increasingly difficulty to find and I believe they can only appreciate in value over the coming years, particularly with the new Lotus F1 team gaining increased exposure. The Excel is being sold with no Reserve Price and a nominal starting price, so someone could get a real bargain. The car has a few little marks and a small areas of laquer is coming away from the drivers door & N/S front wing but considering it has never had a full respray and remember the car is 19 years old it has stood up very well. I have had both rear wheel arches re-enforced a few years ago but there is a small part on the bottom of both back doors where there is a bit of rust, this is a common thing on the Lotus Carltons.(As you can see in the picture) The mileage says 116000 on the clock but the engine, gearbox, discs & pads have done only 1500 Miles. engine is in excellent condition & was rebuilt at 64,000 miles. The 5speed dogleg box & rear diff are also excellent. There are a couple of minor blemishes - lower rear offside qtr & small paint chip on drivers door (see pics). Obviously the vehicle is not concours however, although opinions vary i would describe the car as been in very good condition. The car is MoT`d to next March & taxed to end of September. The interior is all in very nice condition & there are no speaker holes.
